"John Brown's Dream" (baritone ukulele two-finger style, index-lead)

This is a demostration how we could play an old-time tune on baritone ukuelele on index-lead, two-finger style as we'd do on banjo.
"Old Sport" on up-picking banjo

From Albert Hash, and I added a variation on the second part as my frined Kilby Spencer often plays. Sorry that the video is not smooth. I tried a different setting and it turned out really bad.

"Fortune" (from Richard Bowman)

Here is my take on Richard Bowman's "Fortune." His version was influenced by Ernest East's. I was supposed to record and post a few last week but I was sick and didn't make it. I recovered and hope to play music this weekend.

"Cluck Old Hen" on two-finger style banjo (open A tuning). Here is a glimpse of my new place. I brought all the recording gears, but I forgot about usb-c to a cable to connect my ipad and the gears. So this was captured on ipad's camera and microphone. In that room, I can't feel the sound or vibration caused by a truck stopped in front of my place. Perfect sound isolation I looked for.
"Did you ever see the Devil, Uncle Joe?"(two-finger style banjo)

As I did it on the last video, I use the same thumb pattern here. The banjo tuned Double D. Here is an announcement: I'm moving to a place which has a solid soundproof room in a few days. After I get settled, you can expect more videos to be uploaded more frequently. Stay tuned!

This is a new style I practiced and developed these past months. The only role of the thumb of my right hand is to hit 5th string on the backbeat. Double C tuning (gCGCD)

i love it. i think this is as close to a tutorial for it as anyone can find for now. 😊
Great job! I love Old Time Music, I play guitar (poorly), and I love Japan ( I used to live Osuka-cho, Kakagewa Prefecture)
great playing
I'm so happy to see someone exploring these kinds of old time guitar backup. I love the standard boom chuck but the world of old time guitar is so broad and fascinating that it's good to see someone breaking out of the standard boom chuck.
Amazing!
Thanks!
Is this in standard tuning capoed up?
Yes, aEAC#E in key of A (gDGBD tuning with capo on 2nd fret).
@@OldTimerjp thank you love this tune!
You're welcome!
Makes the best shoe string you ever tied! 😄
Thanks!
Awesome

This is so good - I bet you’re an incredible fiddler now!
Still watching this in 2024. Thanks for posting this and keeping Grandpa's music alive! Hope things are going well in Japan!
Hi Wes, very glad to hear from you. And a huge thanks to you. I remember I saw him at Mt. Airy ten years ago for the first time in person. I remember I visited him and your grandma with your dad once. I remember your dad shared a tons of stories with me about local legends including your grandpa at violin making class and other occasions. So special to spend some time with your family. Of course, I was lucky to play some music with you while I was in NC. I'm planning to perform in public more often this year so that I could share what I have learned in NC with other Japanese people. I hope you are doing ok, too!

Hi! I just found your channel and I am so happy to find more old time players in Japan! Do you ever have any jam sessions? I would love to play with you in person.
Hi. Where are you located? I'm near Osaka. I don't host any public jam sessions, however, you're welcome to come to my place and play some tunes if you'd like.
@@OldTimerjp I am in Tsukuba so a bit too far but that sounds really nice. I will keep watching your channel in the meantime. Thank you!
We can all thank Uncle Pendleton for bringing us here.
nice work
WoW !!! One of the best renditions I have heard!!!! Outstanding!!!

I truly understand why she is a beautiful banjo picking 😍 girl.
Great technique, sound and 2-finger accompaniment for the fiddle. I play clawhammer but will give 2-finger banjo a try. So if there is a tab for the eigth of January I would gladly work on the tune.
East meets west in perfect harmony 👌.
Wow incredible sound, your control of rhythm and volume is amazing!! Awesome that there’s players like you keeping old time 2-finger picking alive !
Thanks. Appreciate it!!
❤😮❤😮❤
nice playing. Gotta sing with now 😊
I'm a sucker for this song to begin with. It reminds me of Nassam Alayna.
Love it. Really into the parts that sound like "editing". I don't have the language to say it more explicitly, but those elements resonated with me.
Super Super Good
Thanks!
Sounds great! What mic did you use? Just got my first banjo. Thanks!
Thanks! I used a dynamic microphone Universal Audio SD-1 without any effects such as EQ or compressor on this video.
Beautiful rhythms by using index as lead. Love this!!!
Thanks!
Good stuff 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks!
Sounds like you are putting the new studio to good use!
Yeah!
Very nice!
Thanks!!
I like your version! Thank you! I am visualizing a prancing and dancing chicken.
Thank you, too!
Well done!
Thanks!
this is fantastic!
Thanks!
really good timing and clarity on the 5th string. I've been playing for over a decade and I wish i could do it that clear!\
Thanks!
Johnny wants to know if that's the banjo you guys made? Sounds great......miss & love you!!!
Yes, it is Nancy! Always sounds good and I really love to play tunes on it! Say hi to him for me. I miss y'all.
So, the thumb is a drone? Very neat.
Yes, just drone, but always on backbeat. Thanks!
Excellent work!
Thanks!
Where did you learn this style?
From Terry Tester, who's played with the Roan Mountain Hilltoppers.
Nice!
Thanks!
Finger lead?
Index lead, if I'd categorize it.
Cool!
i know this video is 7 years old at this point but im really interested in how those tuning pegs are attached
I don't own this instrument anymore, so it's difficult to share you any pics. Simply, they are attached to the neck through holes on the side.
ruclips.net/video/7xMuR0isoc8/видео.htmlsi=x7wVt5aLCbRY_6lQ This is the builder. I remember mine was his akonting model #1, but I hope this video would help you.
